Dear Friend,

It is our great pleasure to invite you to become a Sponsor and Trustee of Shakespeare at Play, a 501(3)C Non Profit organization.

You will be joining an outstanding group of individuals and corporations who have come together to support literacy and the arts for children and families in the Greater Los Angeles area and outlying areas of Los Angeles County.

On May 15th, 2007, Shakespeare at Play was acknowledged and honored by the State of California, by officially declaring it Shakespeare at Play Achievement of Excellence Day. Below are just a few reasons why they received this honorarium.

Shakespeare at Play exists for only one reason; to promote Literacy while bringing the Classics to the Classroom and to the Community at large. Right now we bring various Shakespearean programs to numerous schools in the Burbank and Los Angeles Unified School Districts and this coming year, we are expanding into the San Marino School District.

Shakespeare at Play’s approach to the schools is unique. First, we conduct workshops for the teachers (Professional Development) at each school, giving them new approaches into the world of Shakespeare to inspire their students. Secondly, we return to the school in full Shakespearean costumes doing assemblies for 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders at each school, preparing them for the third and final stage, which is a bus trip to the Colony Theatre in Burbank to see a live production of the Play. After the performance, each child receives their very own copy of the Play. The children really love the shows and get very excited during these productions. Teachers report that on the bus ride home, the students are silent because they are all reading the play. We also have the Visiting Shakespeare program, in which an actor/teacher dresses as William Shakespeare and interacts with the students, having them act out scenes from several of his most famous plays.

In addition, we have brought productions of Hamlet, Julius Caesar and Romeo and Juliet to the High Schools and to Monterey High School, a continuation school for troubled teens in Burbank.

Last semester, Shakespeare at Play launched two new programs into the Burbank school system. One is “Off the Page and on the Stage”, an interactive program, inspired by classics from Aesop’s Fables, for Kindergarten through 2nd grade. The production proved to be so popular, that there have been several requests from schools in other districts to perform it this semester. The other is the Artists in Residence program, in which Shakespeare At Play actor/teachers assist Middle Schoolers in staging a full Shakespearean production from directing and acting through the building of sets and stage managing. Two middle schools put on full productions of Midsummer Night’s Dream in the spring of 2007 and this spring, we took our Artists In Residence program to Cabrillo Elementary School in San Pedro, CA. We also performed our Romeo and Juliet production in Spanglish for some of the schools within the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Besides the school programs, Shakespeare at Play is the official Classical Arts company for the City of Burbank. In Burbank, we have performed at Family Night at the Library at two of their branches. We have also produced the Free Family Shakespeare Festival at the park adjoining the Buena Vista Branch Library. This includes a pre-show consisting of singers, puppet shows, dancers and a class in sword fighting for the children. Anywhere from two to four plays are performed every August for crowds numbering up to 500 per show. This August, we will present A Midsummer Night's Dream and Two Gentlemen of Verona during the first two Sundays of August. We have also performed at the Huntington Library in San Marino, CA.

For the Spring of 2009, Shakespeare at Play has been asked by the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank to produce its most ambitious project to date. The first annual Shakespeare Fair: “A Step Back in Time”; which will be created exclusively for the students, their families, the faculty and staff of all the schools within the Burbank School District. This is going to be a full day event introducing sword fighting, puppet shows, juggling and more. Craft makers such as: potters, weavers, dress makers, soap makers, candle makers and other artisans will demonstrate and explain to the audience how they created their goods during that era. Shakespeare at Play will also be performing one of the Bard’s greatest plays throughout the day. We'll also have the Guild of Saint George, in beautiful Elizabethan costumes, performing the newest songs and dances of their day and answering questions in front of their festive traveling tents.

Shakespeare at Play would cease to exist without the support of Sponsors, such as you. We receive a certain amount of grant money, but not nearly enough to fund the multitude of existing and new projects and free public programs offered throughout the year. It simply wouldn't be possible without private and corporate contributions. Your generous support will help us sustain this ever increasing calendar of events and programs.

As Sponsors, we'll alert you in advance to upcoming special events via the company newsletter. Your company’s name and logo will be placed on a banner to be seen at one if not more of our events (depending on the type the contribution) to advertise that you are a proud sponsor of Shakespeare at Play. You will be publicly acknowledged that you are a sponsor to the media and at that event. If you choose to become a permanent sponsor, your name will appear on our website, along with other sponsors such as Epson, Lark-Ellen and Warner Brothers, to name a few. You will receive gifts with the Shakespeare at Play name and logo on it. Once a year, you will be invited to our annual luncheon as a thank you for your continued support of Shakespeare at Play.

We invite you to visit our Website at: www.shakespeareatplay.org to learn more about our company and the community we’re invested in.
